To promote literacy and language learning in children by providing high-quality, culturally relevant books. Our team of experienced writers and illustrators work hard to create engaging stories that inspire children to explore new cultures and learn new languages.

Meet the Team
Author
Angela Costa Simoes
Angela Costa Simoes is a third-generation Portuguese American who has remained active in the Portuguese community, both in California and nationally, for most of her life. She was inspired to create a series of bilingual children's books to help children (and even parents!) to start learning Portuguese from a very early age after being frustrated by not being able to fully understand childrens books that were only in Portuguese.

Helia Borges Sousa
Helia is a Bay Area resident and the illustrator behind all of the collections in Riso Books. She uses a unique watercolor technique to bring the stories to life.

Mariana Flores
Mariana Flores is a writer and illustrator with a background in animation and a post-graduate degree in Children’s Books. Her illustration work has been published in picture books, middle-grade, educational titles and comics. She illustrated the book, "Miracle of the Roses / O Milagre das Rosas."
Translator
Rita Faria
Rita Faria is a language educator, translator, and author specializing in Portuguese language and culture. She holds a Master’s degree in Translation and has taught Portuguese as a second language at the Munich Community College (Volkshochschule München) as well as through private tutoring. Rita is the author of Learn Portuguese with Poetry and co-founder of the Portuguese language learning platform PortuguesefromPortugal.com. Through her teaching, writing, and content creation, she helps learners connect with both the Portuguese language and the rich cultural traditions that bring it to life.

Angela Silveira Laines
Angela Laines is a Portuguese-American graphic designer and owner of her own business, Silveira Designs. She designs the cover and inner layouts of Riso Books.
